Hello! My name is Melissa Graves, and I am teaching four sections of eighth grade science and one section of sixth grade math.
This will be my eleventh year at Drauden Point, and I’m excited for the opportunity to work with your child. I have a B.S. in Elementary Education from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and an M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction. I live in Aurora with my husband and my son who was born in February 2018. In my free time, I enjoy reading, baking cupcakes, and photography.
We are in our third year of working with the Next Generation Science standards. You should expect for your child to continue to find increased rigor in the science classroom. Students will be asked to explore the science content, and in doing so they will end up making claims, providing evidence, and explaining how this evidence supports their claim. Students will not just memorize scientific facts and theories, but experience them as much as possible.
I have high expectations of your child. I want for your child to grow in interest for the science field, to learn some new information, and to improve his or her literacy and math skills as we apply them to scientific situations. I believe that education is a three-way partnership between students, parents, and teachers. If you have questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.
I look forward to a great year!
